UK court jails Nigerian two years for sexual assault

A United Kingdom court has sentenced a Nigerian man, Obinwa Obichukwu, to two years’ imprisonment after he was convicted of sexually assaulting a woman twice at Euston railway station in London.

The British Transport Police disclosed in a statement published on its website on Tuesday that Obichukwu, 45, of Armstrong Close, Hertfordshire, was sentenced at the Inner London Crown Court on July 21. He had earlier been found guilty in January on two counts of sexual assault.

Beyond the prison sentence, the court imposed a 10-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order on him and directed that he remain on the UK sex offenders register for the same period.

According to the prosecution, the assault took place on the evening of August 20, 2023, after Obichukwu approached the victim as she made her way to Euston station.

He reportedly struck up a conversation by asking what music she was listening to before placing his arm around her shoulder and asking her to return home with him.

As the woman continued along Euston Road, he allegedly grabbed her hand several times while repeatedly telling her he loved her.

Investigators said he later stopped the victim from entering the station and sexually assaulted her at the entrance.

The woman then headed down the escalator towards the London Underground platforms, but Obichukwu allegedly pursued her and carried out a second sexual assault near the ticket barriers.

She eventually managed to push him away, escape from the station, and report the incident to the authorities.

British Transport Police officers subsequently traced Obichukwu to his residence, where he was arrested.

Police said the victim’s account, together with CCTV footage, provided sufficient evidence for the Crown Prosecution Service to approve two counts of sexual assault against him.

Reacting to the conviction, Detective Constable Daniel Burke described Obichukwu as “a sexual predator” who deliberately preyed on a woman travelling alone.

“Obinwa Obichukwu is a sexual predator who targeted a lone woman and attacked her at a busy London station.

“He claimed his assault was consensual and took his case to trial, but fortunately, the jury saw straight through his lies, and he’s now behind bars where he belongs.

“Tackling violence and intimidation against women and girls is a priority for us as a force, and we’re tireless in our efforts to bring offenders like Obichukwu to justice.

“If you experience or witness these crimes on the railway, please report them to us by texting 61016. We will always take action,” Burke said.
